Jiu-Jitsu originated in India among Buddhist monks, who developed it as a form of self-defense during their travels. The term "Jiu-Jitsu" means "gentle art" and is based on three principles: technique, leverage, and balance. The art spread from India to China and then to Japan.
Mitsuyo Maeda, also known as "Count Koma," was a prominent practitioner of Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. After traveling the world, Maeda arrived in Brazil in 1914. He and his group aimed to promote Judo, and one member, Sanshiro "Black Belly" Satake, opened Brazil's first Judo academy in Manaus. Maeda settled in Belém do Pará, where the Conde Koma academy still exists.
In 1915, Maeda met Gastão Gracie, who enrolled his son Carlos Gracie in Jiu-Jitsu. The Gracie family learned from Maeda and, in 1925, established the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Rio de Janeiro at Rua Marques de Abrantes in Flamengo.
The Gracies significantly refined and popularized the art, leading to the development of modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The Gracies, Carlos, Gaston, George, Oswaldo and Helio, always making a very aggressive advertisement challenging everyone to showcase the efficiency of Jiu-jitsu art.
Later, Gracie Academy moved from the downtown area on Rio Branco Avenue 151, 17 and 18, and from now on, Gracie Academy and Gracies have always strived to prove the effectiveness of this martial art. In 1981, the Gracie Academy left Av. Rio Branco and its new headquarters was established at the Vasco da Gama club in Lagoa. In 1985 he changed again and went to Padre Antonio Vieira High College in Humaita, where he is today under the supervision of Master Rolker Gracie.
Master Helio Gracie perfected jiu-jitsu in such a way that it gave the conditions to a lean person to be able to fight a large and strong person, becoming the father of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and from there to the ‘Gracie Jiu Jitsu ‘has only victories.
